About this book

Celt and Saxon, Volume 1, by George Meredith, has a contents list that names chapters, among others, Mr. Adister and Caroline in Book 1 and Miss Mattock and The Dinner-Party in Book 2. The text says a military captain of the O'Donnells had in old days played the adventurer and charmed a maid of a certain age into yielding her hand to him, and that the lady was the squire of Earlsfont's only sister and possessed funded property. Patrick had not a thought of shame devolving on him from a kinsman that had shot at a mark and hit it.

Adiante is said to be as beautiful by day as by night. Mr. Adister is remembered as having said that military training was good for all gentlemen. A captain says of a family that "Deeds not words" would serve for their motto.

About the author
