About this book

The Pocket R.L.S. is subtitled Being Favourite Passages from the Works of Stevenson. One passage says you must have your own pace, and neither trot alongside a champion walker nor mince in time with a girl. The passage adds that a walking tour is not, as some would have us fancy, merely a better or worse way of seeing the country.

One line says quiet minds cannot be perplexed or frightened, but go on in fortune or misfortune at their own private pace, like a clock during a thunderstorm. A further line says there is a certain frame of mind to which a cemetery is, if not an antidote, at least an alleviation, and advises that if you are in a fit of the blues you go nowhere else. A line says that where a man is all pride, vanity, and personal aspiration, he goes through fire unshielded.
