About this book

A secret late supper in Miss Ladd's school brings together girls whose friendships are already shaped by money, pride and competing claims to leadership. Emily Brown and Cecilia Wyvil have finished their education and are preparing to leave. Francine de Sor, a newcomer from the West Indies, feels slighted by the others, while the lace on her nightdress quickly changes the room's attention. Wilkie Collins opens I Say No with this small social contest before carrying his novel into London and country houses.

The mystery sits within a closely observed world of manners and personal loyalties. A later encounter shows Francine trying to win the attention of Alban Morris, an artist devoted to Emily, as he considers whether Francine would be a suitable friend for her. Readers interested in nineteenth-century British fiction will find pointed dialogue, uneasy friendships and the importance of judging people's motives beneath their polite words.

About the author

Wilkie Collins

Collins wrote The Woman in White for Dickens's magazine and then The Moonstone, which is usually called the first English detective novel and gave the form Sergeant Cuff, the country-house theft and the unreliable multiple narration.
