About this book

Once Upon a Time, and Other Child-Verses is credited to Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman. The contents list names, among others, The Sick Fairy, The Enchanted Tale of Banbury Cross, A-Berrying, The Three Margery Daws and A Valentine for Baby. A verse about a white horse says that he was snow-white without a speck, with silver bells ringing, and that an old wife held his bridle-rein while the king was there with all his train.

A verse says that John, Sammy and Tom and their sweet little sister had never a sled, but dragged the worn kitchen-broom behind them in its room, just as gayly. A piece headed Little Peachling is labelled A Japanese Folk-lore Story and speaks of the foot of the Golden Dragon Hill, ages ago, in a snug little house. A verse that mentions Willie Winkie says that the child that will keep awake will have to take the worst and ugliest dream in the fleet.
