About this book

Ted and the Telephone is by Sara Ware Bassett. An author's note acknowledges the generosity of Mr. Thomas Augustus Watson, the associate of and co-worker with Mr. Alexander Graham Bell. Ted Turner, who has a small tenement in Freeman's Falls, does not covet the big colonial mansion, but at times wishes he might exchange houses with Mr. Laurie. Ted feels himself to be a lucky boy and likes to study, though he detests Latin, French, and history and revels in shop-work, mathematics, and the sciences.

Into the workshop comes Alexander Graham Bell, who says a device is the receiver and transmitter of his Harmonic Telegraph, and Ted asks breathlessly whether that was the beginning of Mr. Watson's work with Mr. Bell. The Fernalds, a speaker says, have been in the settlement since dawn working to save life and property, and Ted blushes that he had not thought about the villagers.
