About this book
The Fugitive is by Rabindranath Tagore and is inscribed to W.W. Pearson. The contents list names, among others, Kacha and Devayani, Ama and Vinayaka, and The Mother's Prayer.
A numbered piece addresses an Eternal Fugitive, round whose bodiless rush stagnant space frets into eddying bubbles of light. A speaker tells a little flower: “I am like the night to you,” and says that all that can be given is peace and a wakeful silence hidden in the dark. A speaker imagines: “If I were living in the royal town of Ujjain, when Kalidas was the king's poet, I should know some Malwa girl.” Where speaker names are set out, Gandhari says the time has come to renounce him, and when Dhritarashtra asks “Whom, my queen?” the answer is “Duryodhana!”
