About this book
The Little Hunchback Zia is a book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, with illustrations by Spencer Baird Nichols and W. T. Benda. The little hunchback Zia toils slowly up the steep road, keeping in the deepest shadows, even though the night had long fallen. An old woman cries "Begone!" in a smothered shriek and says a creature born a hunchback comes on earth with the blight of Jehovah's wrath upon him.
The talk of the passing throng, as the text reports it, includes that the great Emperor Augustus had issued a decree that all the world of his subjects should be enrolled. The travelers are wending their way to the little town of Bethlehem. A woman says "Be not afraid" and "Draw nigh and behold!" The text says the child was the light itself.
