—Pauvre Louis! Puisque vous avouez qu'il n'est plus à craindre pour mon pays, je peux vous avouer que, malgré ses torts envers moi, je l'aime beaucoup.

—Je l'ai bien vu! Sans cela je ne vous l'eusse pas confié. Tous êtes bon et vous lui avez tout pardonné avant même qu'il eût réparé ses torts. Moi, j'ai eu plus de peine à oublier son ingratitude et l'injure qu'il m'a faite de croire que je consentirais à être sa maîtresse.

—Je ne vous reproche pas cette rancune! Je serais jaloux de lui si vous étiez plus miséricordieuse; mais quelle étrange destinée que la sienne, s'il doit passer dans le monde à l'état de roi méconnu!

—Ce que je lui souhaite, moi, tel que je le connais, c'est l'état de roi inconnu!
