About this book

On a sunny June morning, Maurine La Pelle sits sewing when Vivian Dangerfield arrives with a letter announcing a visit from her friend Helen Trevor. Their playful conversation becomes a serious disagreement about whether women can remain loyal friends when affection and rivalry test them. Ella Wheeler Wilcox develops this opening into a narrative poem in seven parts, alongside a substantial collection of shorter verse.

Maurine speaks with confidence about friendship, while Vivian challenges the generosity she believes it requires. The poem gives those arguments emotional weight through memories that return unexpectedly and feelings held in check for another person's sake. A prefatory poem also presents art as a calling more valuable than wealth or status. Published in 1888, the volume suits readers who enjoy stories told in rhyme and poems concerned with loyalty, private feeling, faith and the demands of creative work.
