About this book

A family holiday in the English mountains sets six-year-old Milly and her younger brother Olly buzzing with plans. Their mother has arranged a stay at Uncle Richard's house, where a garden, a small river and other children promise plenty to explore. Milly brings her newly learned geography to the conversation, while Olly worries about which toys can fit into the luggage. Mrs. Humphry Ward builds this children's story around their talk, small discoveries and family routines.

At Ravensnest, an early morning bathe brings a surprise when a stone tips beneath Milly's feet. Later, steady rain interrupts hopes of an outing and gathering wild strawberries. These changes in weather and mood give the holiday its everyday texture. Young readers can follow the siblings' different temperaments, while adults may enjoy the close attention to childish speech and the pleasures of a countryside summer.
