About this book

Ishmael signs aboard the whaler Pequod looking for adventure and finds instead a captain ruled by one purpose. Ahab has lost a leg to Moby Dick, a great white sperm whale, and he means to kill it whatever the hunt costs his crew. Herman Melville built the voyage into something far larger than a sea story, folding in long meditations on whaling, obsession, fate, and the limits of human will. The prose swings from plain talk to near-scripture, and the closing chase remains one of the most famous endings in American fiction. Slow to find readers in 1851, it now sits near the center of the country's literature. This free PDF and EPUB edition brings the full novel to your shelf.

About the author

Herman Melville

Herman Melville (1819–1891) was an American writer who drew heavily from his own experiences as a merchant sailor and whaler in the Pacific. He produced novels, short stories, and poetry that examined moral complexity and the sea, though he remained relatively obscure during his lifetime and saw renewed recognition only after his death.
