About this book
Oxford is by Andrew Lang, sometime fellow of Merton College, Oxford, with illustrations in colour by George F. Carline. The preface says these papers do not profess even to sketch the outlines of a history of Oxford. The preface calls the papers merely records of the impressions made by this or that aspect of the life of the University as it has been in different ages.
The text imagines a man standing, in the days of Eadward, on the hill that was not yet Shotover, who would have seen little but the smoke floating up through the oakwood and the coppice. Wood died in 1695, forgiving every one, and in his Athenæ Oxonienses he had written the lives of all his enemies. Humphrey Prideaux is called a man of the world in the Oxford manner, and the text says he got a studentship at Christ Church in 1668 and took his B.A. degree in 1672.
