About this book

Steamship crossings connect a wealthy family with English society in this novel of sisters, marriage and inherited position. The opening traces the growth of the Vanderpoel fortune through generations of careful bargains, commercial instinct and an intense desire to accumulate wealth. Rosalie, one of Reuben Vanderpoel's daughters, brings the family history into the narrator's wider account of relationships formed across the Atlantic.

Later, gardens and polite conversation provide a setting for Betty's encounters with Lord Dunholm and his son Westholt. She admires Dunholm's courtesy and sees qualities in him that remind her of her own father. Walking with Westholt, she mentions Mount Dunstan, prompting hesitation and thoughts of his family's damaged reputation. These scenes offer readers interested in family fiction a close look at social judgments, where wealth, rank and personal impressions influence how people regard one another.
