Quando morreu, coberto foi de pranto,
Do povo, que o seu nome idolatrava;
Foi tecido de lagrimas o manto,
A mortalha, que ao tumulo levava!
Diziam todos que morrêra um santo!
Dizia o proprio mar que... orphão ficava!
Chorava, assim, uma nação inteira,
Como que a sua esperança derradeira!

Um povo, que acalenta o seu presente,
Ao sol das tradições do seu passado,
Levanta, agora, um monumento ingente,
Ao seu Navegador afortunado,
Na aspiração da Gloria resplendente,
Porque o que é grande é mister ser lembrado.
Aprenda bem o povo a lêr na Historia,
E Deus o inspire para maior Gloria.
