Eric Holt Giménez is an agroecologist, political economist, and author whose work connects food systems with social movements and agrarian change. He spent many years working in sustainable agricultural development in Mexico, Central America, and South Africa, and helped advance the Campesino a Campesino farmer movement. Food Rebellions!, written with Raj Patel and Annie Shattuck, examines the global food crisis through the idea of food sovereignty. The book argues that hunger persists not simply because food is scarce, but because control over land, markets, and production is unevenly distributed. Its international perspective reflects his experience with peasant organizations and his leadership at Food First, the Institute for Food and Development Policy. He later wrote on capitalism and edited Food Movements Unite!, extending his analysis of corporate agriculture and grassroots alternatives. Across these projects, he combines political economy, field experience, and movement history to explain how communities seek greater power over the food they produce and consume. The scholarship links farming practice, policy, ownership, trade, ecology, and democratic participation across borders.
