[1] Antonio de Oliveira Soares, que de capitão de cavallos e

costumes perdidos, passou a frade arrabido e vida muito penitente.

[2] O leitor provavelmente não encontra no seu «Diccionario» o

termo reco. O povo de Traz-os-montes, e de porção da Beira-Alta dá aquelle nome, cuja etimologia ignoro, aos cevados. Eu leio muito pelo diccionario inedito do povo d’aquellas provincias, que sabe a lingua portugueza como fr. Luiz de Sousa.

[3] Nas aldeias do norte d’esta nossa terra tão pittoresca de

linguagem, algumas vezes perguntava eu quantos annos tinha tal velhinho, e não entendia esta resposta: «já passa de dous carros» Vim depois a saber que lá se contam os annos a quarenta por cada carro, por analogia com o carro de pão de quarenta alqueires.

[4] Aut Deus, aut bestia.

[5] A «Sociedade da manta» era uma congregação de

mancebos destemidos que tiveram Coimbra atterrada, e reagiam ao exercito, quando não achavam futricas que escadeirar.
