«Rusia. Amenaza para la civilización occidental»
La primera vez que se dio a conocer la Operación «Impensable» fue en 1959,
cuando fue publicado el segundo volumen de los diarios de Lord Alan
Brooke sobre la guerra. El libro, titulado Triumph in the West, contenía solo
extractos selectos de los diarios escritos en los últimos años de conflicto, pero
el editor, Sir Arthur Bryant, incluyó referencias a un plan de contingencia
pergeñado en 1945 y encargado por Winston Churchill para atacar a la Unión
Soviética. Era material explosivo, sobre todo porque fue publicado cuando la
Guerra Fría alcanzaba su clímax. Pero, aun así, era tan solo una referencia al
plan. El plan original, si es que seguía existiendo, permanecía tentadoramente
oculto. Cuando a la postre se divulgaron los archivos del Comité de
Planificación Conjunta en 1972, aparecieron en varias carpetas con minutas e
informes en los National Archives (entonces conocidos como Public Record
Office, o PRO). En una de las carpetas, que contenía los informes de 1945 del
CPC, faltaban varias partes y minutas del mes de mayo y estaban marcadas
como «eliminadas». No había indicio alguno del dramático contenido de
aquellos documentos suprimidos, pero es muy probable que incluyeran los
delicados planes relacionados con un conflicto con la Unión Soviética. La
Guerra Fría seguía muy viva en 1972, y semejante revelación habría sido
inconcebible. De hecho, cuando en 1980 sufrió las presiones del experto en
defensa Julian Lewis, la Oficina del Gabinete confirmó que no tenía en su
haber más documentos sobre la Operación «Impensable». Pero, de repente,
en 1998, transcurridos casi ocho años desde la caída de la Unión Soviética, el
Ministerio de Defensa difundió un archivo titulado «Rusia. Amenaza para la
civilización occidental» y lo depositó en el PRO. Dicho archivo contenía los informes definitivos de la Operación «Impensable» confeccionados por la
CPC, junto con la consiguiente correspondencia entre el primer ministro y los
jefes del Estado Mayor, pero no había rastro de los mapas adjuntos
originalmente al informe.
Documentos del espionaje polaco
Al Comité Histórico Anglo-polaco, formado en el año 2000, le fue
encomendada la identificación y obtención de los documentos que ilustraban
la enorme contribución del espionaje polaco a la causa aliada en la Segunda
Guerra Mundial. Pese a las exhaustivas búsquedas en archivos públicos y
privados, así como en los archivos del Servicio de Inteligencia Secreto (SIS)
británico, a los que normalmente es imposible acceder, no se hallaron pruebas
de la importante documentación de la Oficina II polaca, entregada al final de
la guerra a las autoridades británicas. El comité llegó a la conclusión de que
aquellos papeles debían ser destruidos en algún momento de la década
posterior. No obstante, tal como descubrió este diligente grupo de
historiadores y académicos, existen grandes cantidades de material de
espionaje en los archivos de Polonia, Gran Bretaña y EE. UU.
Archivos soviéticos
Tal como ha recalcado el gran analista de las relaciones anglo-soviéticas, el
profesor Fraser Harbutt, las fuentes soviéticas disponibles desde 1989 han
sido decepcionantes. El material de archivo creado durante la guerra es
escaso, especialmente el relacionado con el periodo de este estudio, y la
mayoría de los informes que se han difundido abarcan los últimos años de la
Guerra Fría y no los primeros. Stalin destruyó buena parte de las pruebas
escritas sobre sus años en el poder, unos años en que ejerció una dominación
total de la política nacional y exterior soviética.
