Sur mon chemin, je fis un petit détour du côté du cimetière. Après avoir cherché quelque temps, je découvris les trois pierres debout à l'entrée de la lande; celle du milieu grise et à demi cachée sous la bruyère, celle d'Edgar Linton légèrement recouverte de gazon et de mousse, celle d'Heathcliff encore presque nue.
J'errais autour d'elles, sous ce beau ciel, j'observai les vers se glissant dans l'herbe, j'écoutai la douce brise qui agitait les feuilles, et je me demandai comment quelqu'un pouvait imaginer un sommeil inquiet à ceux qui dormaient sous cette terre si tranquille.
