On enterra Geneviève à Fontainebleau, auprès de sa mère. M. Lauter et Léon ne se consolèrent jamais de la perte de cette charmante fille, et son souvenir mêla jours une profonde amertume au bonheur qu'elle ne partageait pas. Son appartement fut fermé, et, pendant tout le temps que vécurent les personnes dont nous avons raconté l'histoire, on l'ouvrit trois fois par an, aux anniversaires de la naissance, de la fête et de la mort de Geneviève. On y passait la journée; tout était resté comme le jour de sa mort; on parlait d'elle, et les enfants de Rose et de Léon furent accoutumés à un si grand respect pour la mémoire de la sœur de leur père, qu'ils n'avaient jamais vue, qu'ils n'osaient ni jouer ni faire du bruit près de l'appartement de leur tante Geneviève.
