[1] Estes pedaços são arrancados ás reflexões philosophicas do Gabiru, a que elle chamou A Arvore. A Arvore porquê? Porque com ella germinaram, deitaram grandes ramos, raizes subterraneas e fundas. A Arvore sustentou-se de desgraça. As suas raizes alimentaram-se d'este humus--a vida dos pobres, das prostitutas, dos gebos. Damos aqui alguns pedaços do livro, o necessario apenas para se vêr a transformação do Gabiru, pelo contacto com os sêres humildes e a dôr, promettendo publical-o mais tarde com a sua conclusão.
